Nothing in life comes free.
That means we make tradeoffs, whether in our time or our money, or in the emphasis we have to make on different areas of our life. We might ask God for a bigger house, but along with that comes higher utility costs and a bigger tax bill at the end of the year. That child we so desperately want brings sacrifices of our time and freedom.
Yet one thing is free. It cost a man his life, and once the bill was paid, it became available to everyone else.
Romans 6:23 tells us the deal Jesus worked for us:
“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
That means we don’t have to pay the bill for our sins. Those who don’t come to Christ have to tally the charges for what they’ve done, but Jesus’ followers have Paid in Full already stamped on life’s receipt.
John 19:31 relates part of the price Jesus paid:
“Since it was the day of preparation, and so that the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken and that they might be taken away.”
John 1:1 gives us the credentials that prove Jesus’ PhD:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
Matthew 27:46 reveals the true cost of our salvation:
“And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’ ”
Revelation 20:14 is our guarantee against double jeopardy:
“Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.”
1 John 2:2 tells how wide the net is cast:
“He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.”
2 Peter 2:4 lets us know even the angels are held accountable:
“For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment…”
2 Timothy 3:16 underscores his contract with humanity is available for us to read:
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”
Our freedom in Christ was bought with a price. Let’s make the cost worth it.
