Coming Clean with Christ

Coming clean can have multiple meanings.

We throw a muddied towel in the washer, and when we pull it out, we check to see if it’s come clean.

We catch someone in a compromised situation, and we encourage them to come clean, to be honest about what’s happening.

A company is about to expand, and they want to encourage new investors. They are required to come clean, telling all the possible risks alone the way.

How do we come clean in our spiritual walk with Christ?

1 John 4:1 tells us to compare our ministers’ words with the Bible.

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

Romans 16:17 encourages us to avoid divisive people.

“I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.”

Romans 12:1 describes our bodies as belonging to our Lord.

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”

2 Timothy 3:5 expects us to look for truth in other people’s walk with God.

“Having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.”

1 Thessalonians 5:21 raises our standards.

“But test everything; hold fast what is good.”

Acts 17:11 shows how we can best come clean before God.

“Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.”

When we come clean with Christ, all three meanings of the phrase apply. Sin is sloughed off, we are honest about how we live, and we offer the purity of the love of Christ to others around us.

Let’s come clean with Christ. It’s the only way to live.
