Searching the Horizon

English Audio Version

The first European sailing ships to reach the Americas had no idea what to expect as they embarked across the ocean.

They hoped to reach Asia, but there was the chance they’d fall off the edge. They’d never know, however, if they didn’t leave the shore. Looking back at where they’d been would never get them to their goal across the sea.

Their only hope was to keep watch on the horizon and trust that land would come into their view.

We navigate our Christian journey by keeping our eyes on the horizon. We watch for Christ, and we trust we’ll reach him some day. We won’t get there looking at where we’ve been. Our past is just that, in the past, and we can’t live there and move into our future.

Genesis 19:26 gives us an example we can hold in our mind’s eye.

“But Lot's wife, behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.”

Lot’s wife faced a dilemma. She enjoyed her old life. When God said to move on, she treasured what she was leaving more than where God was leading.

We must treasure God more than we treasure our old life. We walk away from yesterday and into tomorrow. God is on the horizon. Just like those ships that sailed into the vast ocean, not really knowing where their journey would lead, we travel with God. If we keep our eyes on him, we’ll reach our destination.

Putting our old life behind us allows God to be the master of our fate.
