There’s a comic book character that runs faster than any other. He’s called The Flash, because he’s here and he’s gone. We can barely see him before he’s out of sight.
Sometimes it seems our freedom in Christ lasts about as long. We kneel in prayer, Christ wipes away our sins, and as soon as we’re out the door, the muck of daily living covers us again.
How can we keep our saintly garments clean when every step we take leaves us stained with the grime of our humanity?
Galatians 5:1 points us in the correct direction.
“For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”
Stand firm, that’s all there is to it? Surely it can’t be that easy.
Yes, and no. We choose to stand firm. That’s easy. Following through is the harder part. That’s where we need some help.
Here are four words of wisdom that will strengthen your failing willpower:
- Quit hanging around with the same old people. Yeah, just quit.
- Spend time reading the Bible. Every day. Instead of doing other stuff.
- Get involved in a believing fellowship. Just. Show. Up. They will welcome you.
- When you slip up, don’t give up. Start over. Jesus forgives you every time.
Our scripture verse reminds us of a very important thing: Don’t submit again to a yoke of slavery that Jesus has already cast off. You are free. Don’t let the devil clamp his manacles on you ever again.
Freedom from wrongdoing doesn’t have to be a flash in the night. We can enjoy it permanently through the power of Christ.
