God’s Path to Contentment

Happiness. Joy. Satisfaction.

Call it what you will. You just want the stress of life’s problems to fade into the background.

Done. God says he has a plan, and it’s found in Mark 7:10.

“Honor your father and your mother.”

That’s it? you ask. It seems too simple.

Okay, you’ve got me there. The passage is over-simplified. It’s pulled out of the larger verse. Jesus says much more to us before and after that well-known commandment.

The thing is, though, it may be a very simple phrase, but it entirely sums up God’s plan for contentment with life.

Here’s what I mean:

Quit chasing me, me, me, and begin to do things for others (our parents, first of all).

Realize that people want our time, not what we can give to them (our children, also).

See the true impact we have on the lives of people around us. What we do affects the happiness of others (on our job, in our home, and during the hustle and bustle of rush hour traffic).

Just slow down. Our walk with God is not a 24/7 sprint. We must take rest breaks, chat with our family and friends, enjoy a good meal out on the town, and quit seeing the world as a place to conquer financially and socially.

The important things in our life must be God and family. The rest? It all becomes rust and rot in the end.

Our path to contentment starts with, “Honor your father and your mother,” and it ends with a better life focused on God and the people who walk this life with us.

Keeping our eyes on God is the only way to reach our heavenly goal. Let’s remain focused on him.
