Leveling up is gaming terminology.
Yes, computer games. Each character must achieve a final goal, and they work through “levels” reflecting the progress they’ve made.
Each new level gives them advantages in terms of supplies, speed, or knowledge. The character performs better than they did before.
When we level up in Christ, we leave behind who we once were, and we become better in him.
Let’s look at James 2:15-16 for an example.
“If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and filled,’ without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?”
Social media today is full of empty well-wishers. We click the “love” icon, or the “tears” icon, expressing our connection to a post. Do we ever follow through with a physical expression of that connection?
It’s like when someone greets us and asks how things are going for us. We start to tell them, their eyes glaze over, and they pat our shoulder and say, “Put it in God’s hands.”
We just did -- by telling them. Didn’t they listen? We are God’s hands on this earth. God works through us to achieve his desired ends, and when we step around a need with little more than a verbal “God bless you,” we are losing out on God’s best for us.
We level up in Christ when we follow through on our words of well-wishing.
- Replace the leaking faucet.
- Take the kids for the evening.
- Do a grocery run.
- Offer to buy them gas.
Use what you have, your skills and possessions, to make people’s lives better. You will be a better person than you were before.
When we level up for Jesus, we improve through his grace and his love.
