A bird’s wings are amazing.
It’s not just that they help the animal fly; it’s how they do it.
Individually, each feather has an impossible job. It can’t get the bird aloft on its own. Yet, when the bird moves its wings in just the right way, at just the right angle, something bigger than the sum of its wings and the air surrounding it happens.
Lift.
The bird gets lift from the shape of its wings, the way the air moves across each individual feather, and the pressure from the air underneath its wings.
Christians soar in much the same way. Hebrews 12:1 gives us an example of our airborne flight with our Lord.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”
If we clip the bird’s wings, it won’t get off the ground. If we tie a weight to its leg or place a cage around it, it’s stuck on the earth.
We must toss off the weight of our old ways and let ourselves be lifted in Jesus. We must get into the air and let it flow across our feathers. Our Christian fellows will be our support, our encouragement, and the lift under our wings. We will fly high when we spend our time with others who also trust in the Lord to help them soar over the problems in this life.
We can fly high when we let Jesus be the air that caresses us daily, lifting us ever closer to him.
