Too many people struggle with self-image.
How do we determine who we are, and how do we discover our self-worth in what we do?
A good start is getting a pat on the back.
We need others to tell us when we’re doing well, and if we’re not, our correction needs to come with gentleness.
We don’t need to be beat over the head with harsh words or a critical attitude.
Proverbs 15:4 reminds us of how important it is to consider what we say:
“A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.”
Those to whom we speak kindly will develop strong roots and a thick canopy of leaves that will serve them well during the storms that will pound them. If, however, we berate them with a battering barrage of contempt, they will topple when the winds come, for they won’t have the resiliency to endure.
As followers of Christ, it’s up to us to set the example that others will follow. We need to build up those around us with words of confidence, so they will have the strength to become the best they can be.
Our growth in Christ flourishes when we are well-watered and warmed by the sunlight of praise.
