There are times it would be satisfying to be the Hulk, to have a big fist, and to smash the troublemakers around us.
We want to cry, “Waaah! Enough!” to those who torment us, whether emotionally, financially, or spiritually.
Yet, we find that’s not God’s way. He directs us down a different path. When we’ve about had our fill, he whispers to us to be gentle, to speak softly, and to reflect his love to everyone who has abused us.
Romans 12:14 goes even further:
“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.”
How do we bless the bad characters in our life? It’s hard to think up ways, because we want our fist back. We want to smash them like we were smashed, and to wreak havoc on them as they did to us.
Here are some blessing starters:
- A phone call wishing them well
- A card for a birthday or anniversary
- A nice word about them to a third person
- A prayer request in church
- A plate of cookies, a cake, or a gift card to a good restaurant
We’re not the ones who get to choose whether to bless the troublemakers. God’s Word says do it. It’s up to us to follow through.
We find God’s strength in the kindness we show toward others.
