A Kick in the Seat

Motivation isn’t always easy to come by.

Take procrastinators. They’re never motivated, except by looming deadlines. It’s the night before the big report is due, and they burn the midnight oil, hoping beyond hope to get it completed in time.

Sometimes we need a kick in the seat to encourage us to get on the ball. A recurring phone alarm works for some. Others, a pending reward of cake and coffee. For some, a monetary remuneration is the only way to get them out of bed.

How can we tempt others to show love to their fellow man? Do we legislate it, or is there a better way?

Hebrews 10:24-25 gives us our kick in the seat as Christians. We must be desperate to show kindness and compassion to everyone we meet.

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

Proverbs 30:18-19 reveals how little we know about motivation. What makes people tick? We must research and find out.

“Three things are too wonderful for me; four I do not understand: the way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a [woman].”

1 John 4:12 gives us our answer. Our connection to God empowers us with a consuming desire to shower love on everyone.

“No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.”

When we become truly dissolved in God, and he is part of us, we can’t help but jump out of bed and rush out of doors. We won’t be able to stop showing love to others. God will spill out of us, and we won’t be able to hold him in.

Excerpt of the Day

Disbelief is fine. Refusing to move past it when confronted with the truth cuts God to the quick.
