The Sand Dollar Prayer

The Legend of the Sand Dollar is famous for using the different parts of the sand dollar to illustrate facets of the Christian tenets of Faith.

The slits remind us of the wounds of Christ. There is an Easter lily on the top, with the Star of Bethlehem in its center. On the reverse side is a poinsettia. Inside are the doves that represent peace. All of this shows that the handiwork of the Creator can be seen in the smallest details of nature.

However, have we heard of the Sand Dollar Prayer?

According to legend, the five holes in the sand dollar’s skeleton represent the five key aspects God desires from us when we pray.

The first hole reminds us to give our THANKS to him.

1 Corinthians 1:4 says we are to give THANKS to God continually, because of the grace given us by Christ Jesus on the cross.

The second hole reminds us that we are to pray WITHOUT CEASING.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 reveals the key to a successful prayer life. We are to come before God WITHOUT CEASING, for we must be in a continual attitude of prayer.

The third hole reminds us that we are to pray in the SPIRIT.

Ephesians 6:18 encourages us to make our supplications with perseverance; to pray in the SPIRIT; and to lift up others in our prayers at all times.

The fourth hole reminds us of God’s innermost desire, for he wishes his creation to be SAVED.

Romans 10:1 calls on us to keep the salvation of the world in our prayers, for it is through our prayers that sinners will be SAVED.

The fifth hole reminds us that he will DELIVER us in our time of trouble.

Psalm 50:14-15 offers us encouragement, for God tells us that when we perform our duty to him, and call on him in our day of trouble, he will DELIVER us from the oppressor.

So, what is the Sand Dollar Prayer?

We PRAY unto you, oh Lord, WITHOUT CEASING, as we come in your SPIRIT, that we will be SAVED, and your mighty hand will DELIVER us from evil.

Now about those doves. They are really the teeth of the sand dollar, and according to the legend surrounding the Sand Dollar Prayer, the holes in the sand dollar channel our prayers, but the doves put bite into every prayer we pray.

God’s creation gives us reminders of his greatness. It is his way of drawing his children back to him.
