Technology constantly requires us to get smarter. A single remote control operates our TV, the DVR, the lights, and the ceiling fan. We maintain friendships on Facebook, and we have computer screens in our cars.
However, are all these skills making us wiser?
In 1 Kings 3, Solomon followed the instructions of his father David, and because his actions showed he loved the Lord, God appeared to him in a dream. God said, “Ask me whatever you want, and it will be yours.”
Solomon asked for only one thing: wisdom. God was pleased and gave him wisdom plus the things he didn’t ask for: wealth and honor.
We have our children to show us how to run the remote control. Facebook is constantly reinventing itself to make it easier for us to use. Our cars talk to us, explaining how to operate them.
What tells us how to make ourselves wiser?
God’s Word gives us the answer to three questions that will help us gain wisdom from the Lord.
#1. What is the Bible’s formula for gaining wisdom?
James 1:5 answers this question. All we have to do is ask God, and he will give us wisdom liberally and without reproach.
When we face a situation where we don’t know the right choice, we can fall to our knees and implore God to give us clarity on the matter. Then we can step forward, certain we do not walk alone. We have the Father at our side.
#2. Does God place any conditions on our request for wisdom?
Yes. We find Jesus’ answer to this question in John 15:7. He tells us that we must abide in him, and his words must abide in us. Then, and only then, we can ask what we will, and he will give it to us.
When we are yoked with Jesus, and we remain immersed in his Word, our requests will be tempered with the reality of the Risen Savior. We will want what he wants, and his wisdom will be ours.
#3. How should we bring our request unto him?
In Matthew 21:22, Jesus instructs us to ask in prayer and to believe for the answer. If we do both of these, he will grant our request.
Our prayer can be a quick thought in a stressful situation, or a long night spent prostrate before him. However, unless we believe the answer is on the way, we are no better off than someone who has not prayed at all. It is our belief in the power of Jesus that makes the difference.
When Solomon asked for wisdom, he believed in God’s ability to grant his request. God was so pleased that he also gave him wealth and honor.
God will do the same for us.
If we ask of God with a right heart, and we believe in the answer, he will shower us with wisdom, and he will add to it wealth and honor.
