The World’s Birthright Becomes Ours

There’s no denying the riches found in the world.

Just visit Vegas. Diamonds shimmer from every wrist, and money flows like green tea.

Golfer John Daly is a legend on the course. He’s a different legend off the course. He famously claims he’s gambled away $55 million, and he’s had a good time doing it.

It seems unfair that the world has access to such riches only to waste them so carelessly. Yet, the Word tells us that the birthright of one can very easily become the birthright of another.

1 Chronicles 5:1 reveals that the birthright of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, was given to Joseph. Reuben misused his birthright (Genesis 35:22), and the riches of God’s blessings became Joseph’s.

What causes God to shift birthright blessings from one person to another? According to 1 Chronicles 5:1, it’s in how we use our birthright.

A number of years ago, a Fort Worth, Texas, oilman left a vast fortune to his son. His son lived high, spending millions on an ultra-modern mansion, wild parties, and a beauty queen who was equally wild.

His life crumbled around him. He battled a murder indictment, saw his mansion empty and vandalized, and his family’s ranch turned into a housing development. He found God in the disaster his life had become, but his birthright was already gone, given to his lawyers and an ex-wife he no longer adored.

David’s words in 1 Chronicles 16:29 tell us how to shift the world’s birthright so that their blessings become ours.

“Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.”

Reuben lost his birthright because he misused it. The same thing happened to that Texas oilman. Instead, let’s do as David espoused, so that those lost birthrights will come unto us.

When we offer ourselves unto God, he showers his blessings upon us.
