Talking About Money

English Audio Version

Just the title will set some people off.

Money? That’s my business, not yours.

If we have it, we want to protect it. If we don’t, we think we deserve it.

The truth is, money is necessary to survive in today’s world. There are utilities to run, food to consume, and our health . . . we can’t maintain that with thin air alone.

We need money, and to get it, we must work for it. Not many people are born into an inheritance that refills their bank account every month.

The Bible says we can have a lot, and that’s okay. Or we can have a little, and that’s okay, too. The kink in the supply chain happens when we make money our end-all; the reason we get out of bed; our cause for following Jesus; our motivation that is stronger than family, good judgment, and kindness toward others.

Proverbs 23:4-5 tells us working to be rich is a useless task. Our money will soon be gone with the wind.

“Do not toil to acquire wealth; be discerning enough to desist. When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven.”

Psalm 37:16 says the acquisition of money doesn’t justify bad behavior and poor choices. Our righteousness before God is more important.

“Better is the little that the righteous has than the abundance of many wicked.”

James 2:5 explains that the lack of money can be a springboard to increasing our faith in the providing hand of our heavenly Father.

“Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?”

The Word of God is a great resource for financial advice. If we want to work hard to build our financial foundation, the Bible tells us how.

The Bible also tells us money can’t be our primary motivation for living. It’s here and it’s gone. It’s how it benefits us that’s important.

Money is secondary. Christ must be first in our lives.
