Halftime in a football game.
What’s the point in that distracting spectacle? The real event is on the field. The ball, man. Put it back into play. That’s what we’ve come to see.
We also can find cheerleaders nonessential to the game. Entertainment. A pretty fixture but nothing to do with what’s happening on the field.
Not true!
Attend a game without someone to cheer the players on, perhaps a youth game where no spectators show, no one in the stands, and it’s just the teams battling it out on the field.
How much motivation are the players likely to feel? Not much, you can count on that.
It’s the cheering that drives them to kick farther, run faster, and tackle harder. The support, vocal and loud, is a boost to their playing style.
1 Timothy 1:7 reveals the power of cheerleading for the Christian:
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
Fear of failure? Banished when our Christian brothers and sisters are cheering us on.
A common goal? Ours when we are bonded in love with our fellow believers.
Victory on the field? Assured as we keep our thoughts centered on the One who has redeemed us.
And that halftime celebration? Sometimes we need to take some time off, gather with our church body, and have a party in Jesus’ name. We will be reenergized for the second half, and we will emerge as Team Victorious when the Lord returns for his own.
Let’s cheer for our fellow Christian! We want everyone to win the battle for Christ.
