The family tradition in Zach Hively’s family was for their dog, Pepper, a Black Lab mix, to help open the Christmas presents.
She could be trusted with any gift (if it wasn’t food) and would open them with care until all the wrapping paper was gone.
When Pepper’s health started to slip, they decided to make her last Christmas the best ever. On the day, however, she stumbled on the boxes and wrapping paper and finally went to the next room, out of the way.
Finally, they hit on presents Pepper could open. Dog treats. They wrapped several of them with discarded wrapping paper and called Pepper in. Soon, she was opening presents like a puppy and enjoying each treat.
Zach says he’s forgotten what he received that Christmas, but he’s never forgotten how much joy Pepper got from her last Christmas gift.
Isaiah 9:6 puts this in perspective for the Christian:
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Not exactly dog treats. God’s gift is much better. Our Christmas present is called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace.
