Giving What It Takes

English Audio Version

Everything has a price.

Our happiness, the moments we spend with our children, even the vacations we choose to take.

In 2010, a family of four from England vacationed in Malta. As they were finishing up their pleasurable time away from home, the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland erupted, sending ash across Europe and grounding all air traffic.

The family managed to catch the last flight to Rome but were stranded in the ancient city. Desperate, they rented a car and drove non-stop to Calais, France, a sixteen-hour journey. There they caught the ferry to Dover, England.

The drive set them back nearly five grand. Their flight from Malta to England, paid for, was useless, and they knew they had to give what it took to make it home.

Matthew 26:28 says:

“For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

Jesus said this during The Last Supper. Our Lord knew what it would take for him to offer salvation to all humanity. He was willing to go there, no matter the price.

Where does that leave us? What are we willing to give up to gain our salvation? To do good for other people? To be kind, considerate, and polite to those who treat us poorly?

A sixteen-hour drive? Would we do that?

Our lifeblood? How about that?

Jesus did. He gave what it took, even when it took everything from him.

When we put Jesus first, no price is too great to pay.
