Pull out a self-help book, and you’ll find the same message over and over.
- It’s up to you.
- They are your bootstraps. Pull yourself up.
- The responsibility for what happens to you belongs to you.
- You deserve your rewards because you earned them.
- You can take to the bank what you roll up your sleeves and earn.
None of this is bad advice . . . as long as we don’t leave God out of our plans.
Psalm 127:1 says:
“Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.”
The self-help advice we read is good, and we should give it sincere consideration . . . but we must let God approve our plans.
Search out what the Bible has to say about our intents.
Spend time in prayer getting God’s mind on our next endeavor.
Ask the advice of Godly people who have spent their lives putting God first.
If we forget to include God in our game plan, and we venture out totally on our own, we’re liable to strike out, leaving us deeper in despair than when we started.
God’s plan needs to be our plan. When we’ve settled that, then it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get busy.
What we do for God brings rewards to us, also.
