What does the next day look like to you?
That one’s easy. Probably about like today.
What about next weekend? Or next year?
How about in a decade . . . or two? Where will your life be?
Can you imagine where you are headed . . . and if you’ll actually get there? Many people don’t.
What makes the difference? Why do some people get a long life, and others are taken before their time?
Proverbs 10:27 says:
“The fear of the Lord prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be short.”
We need to understand what this verse is telling us. After all, Christians die young, too. So, what does it mean that our fear of the Lord prolongs life?
Well, exactly what it says.
When we respect the truths revealed in the Word, we live differently. Less risky. We think ahead, plan for tomorrow, and consider whether a “night on the town” is all it is made out to be.
We will get as many years as our genetic makeup and environment allow, without any lopped off for carelessness and derring-do.
We know that stress kills. Is it any wonder that we’re told the wicked die young?
Here’s an example gleaned from the Bible, where we’re told not to let the sun go down on our anger. That’s about more than the emotional damage we can cause. Our stress is lowered, our blood vessels are no longer constricted, and we don’t suffer a heart attack.
That’s how we prolong our life in the fear (respect) of the Lord.
God wants us to live a long life. His Word gives us guidelines to make it so. Let’s get on board and make it happen.
Our plan is God. Our result is many additional years for us to enjoy.
