The Best Epitaph Ever Written in Stone

English Audio Version

Who wants to think about dying?

Living is much more interesting. Our favorite restaurant. Weekends at the beach. A drive to the mountains.

Yet, the facts of our future pop us around us all the time.

We drive by on our way to the beach, and there they are.

We find them in the mountains, on the way to the restaurant . . . wherever we are, they are inescapable.

Some day we will all wear a granite headdress. We will be adorned with a crown of stone.

What will be written on our headstone? What will people read about us?

It depends on the life we live, on the impression we make on others, and on the legacy we leave behind.

Here’s a good legacy from Psalm 112:3:

“Wealth and riches are in his house, and his righteousness endures forever.”

Who wouldn’t want those words etched into the stone we wear once we’re in the ground?

Let’s take a moment to look at the two epitaphs in this verse separately.

Epitaph No. 1:

“Wealth and riches are in his house.”

We’ve worked to be successful. No couch potatoes in our living room. God has provided us opportunities, and we’ve taken advantage of each one. There’s a reason we’ve lived well . . . because we’ve worked hard for it.

Epitaph No. 2:

“His righteousness endures forever.”

This speaks to our character, our moral yardstick. Are we the good person in private that we try to portray when we’re in public? Is our goodness to the core? If it is, bam! Respect is our due.

Certainly, this verse normally references the power and might of God. It works equally well to describe the Christian who’s lived a life that imitates the Son of God and the King of kings.

Let’s live so well that those who come after us will call us honored in Christ’s name.

We live blinded to the spiritual world until it's time for us to grow into maturity in Christ.
