We’ve all seen the cartoon where a comical character meets something that is unexpected and very frightening. The cartoon character’s response? His eyes pop out of his head, his cap pops two feet into the air, and his gloves come completely off his hands. Then, his feet spinning, he pulls back together again, and he takes off running.
That is the response God creates in our enemies. When God comes before our enemies, they become so frightened that there is nothing they will not do to get out of the presence of God.
In 600 B.C. Zedekiah was king of Judah. Elam, a country located in present day Iran, was famous for its military might. Its archers were deadly and feared by Elam’s enemies. Yet, keep in mind our cartoon character. When he saw his enemy, his eyes popped out of his head, and he ran for all he was worth.
What was so frightening to the Elamites that they would run from the almighty God? It was the fierce anger of the Lord.
Turn to Jeremiah 49:37. This passage tells us Elam will be dismayed before her enemies (the people’s eyes will pop out of their heads), God will send evil after her (causing their caps to pop two feet into the air), and he will send the sword after her (causing their gloves to fly off their hands). The people of Elam will turn tail and run for their very lives.
There is more to it, though. Remember our cartoon character? He runs off a cliff, his feet spinning, and then a giant rock falls from the sky. He is decimated, with X’s for eyes and stars spinning around his head. He has been destroyed. Jeremiah 49:38 reveals this end for Elam. The Scripture says God will set his throne in Elam, and Elam’s leadership will be crushed.
That is what God does when the enemy comes after us. He creates a Cartoon Catastrophe. When God comes on the scene, the enemy flees in terror, his feet spinning, because he knows the result. A giant rock is about to land on his head, and that giant rock is God.
God draws the comic strip, and the devil runs when God tells him to.
