Occupied with Joy

English Audio Version

What’s with the sad face?

God doesn’t want to see it in our mirror.

What’s with the sore muscles and the tired eyes?

God has a better gift for us.

Our plan in life isn’t to mope and growl, or to be a dour Christian.

How do we know? God says so in his Word.

Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 tells us we should rejoice in the good things God has place on this earth. It’s the good times we have, our emotional connection with the things we do and enjoy, that will sustain us.

“Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil—this is the gift of God. For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart.”

The emphasis isn’t in the original, but you see what it says. We are to eat and drink and find enjoyment, for this is the gift of God. When we take part of God’s good things, God keeps us occupied with joy in our heart.

Let’s toss out the frowns. Invite friends over for a party. Jump in the pool. Ride the scooter. Put your hands out the sunroof and yell, “Yahoo!”

That’s God’s way.

There’s more to our Christian walk than solemn songs on Sunday morning. Our gray and lifeless clothing? We’ve brighter options we can wear. It’s okay to sparkle with diamonds and wear the latest hairstyle.

As the Word says, God’s gift is wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them.

We are in God’s will when we enjoy the life we’ve been given.
