The Temple of Us

English Audio Version

What’s the purpose in a temple?

Why do we build it in the first place? To be somber . . . to cut out all light?

Or to glory in the presence of the Lord?

The great cathedrals of the Middle Ages were vast complexes of ornate stone and stained glass. We still find them beautiful today.

Modern worship centers are things of beauty, built to honor the Creator who draws us together.

Why then do so many Christians believe we must dress and be dumpy and dour? The Bible tells us otherwise.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us we are the glorious expression of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, and we should live like it.

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

Some people say that means we should glorify God with somber colors and plain faces. Live quietly with no fanfare. Yet who would build a church like that and expect it to uplift the people who attend? We want to see a splash of color and look out through grand stained-glass windows.

We are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Our lives are meant to be lived as an expression of his glory. We must look, behave, and be attractive unto the world.

We must shine with the power of the holy One who welcomes us into a glorious relationship with the Father.

Keep your yard mowed and edged. Arrive in your best car. Polish your shoes. Wear a red shirt. Top it off with a fresh hairstyle or a trendy hat. Strive for financial success. We are a temple, and we represent the Lord of all creation. We are to shine like we’re proud of our spiritual heritage in Christ.

The Temple of Us is the Holy Spirit in the flesh. He is with us everywhere we go. Let’s let him live well.

When Christ reigns in us, we become like him in every way.

If something leads us astray, toss it aside and leave it on the side of the road.
