Department stores face a special challenge.
How do they entice people through the doors?
Sales ads, certainly. That works for people who see them. Yet, it’s the person walking down the street that they need to draw inside. What will tempt them to change their plans and step through the door?
That’s where window dressing comes into its own.
Large windows graced department stores for decades. Window designers attractively arranged the store’s best products for everyone to see. The prettier the display, the more tempted passersby would be to find their way inside.
The meaning has shifted a bit to suggest that what we see on the outside isn’t what we’ll find on the inside, no more than a false front. A store that didn’t live up to its window-dressing hype gained a reputation as a lousy place to shop.
Colossians 3:16 speaks to window dressing.
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
It’s not enough to say we love Christ and we’ve dedicated our life to him. Even attending church and singing the right songs aren’t adequate. Our spiritual bond with Jesus must be more than window dressing. We must live the witness we want people to see.
What’s inside our heart will always come out. Let’s let it be Christ.
