For some children, their first softball game is frightening. A big ball flying through the air, coming straight at them . . . what if they can’t dodge the impending impact?
How about that first bicycle ride . . . alone . . . without training wheels?
Or the first time on the high dive board?
Or roller skates or a skateboard? All can be scary, leaving bruises, scratches, or worse.
What makes young prodigies at these sports so successful? That’s an easy answer. They aren’t afraid, or rather, they consider the excitement of the game more important than the possibility of getting injured.
The prospect of success outweighs the chance of failure.
That’s the enthusiasm a new Christian carries. They see the possibility of success all around them. The pitfalls, bah! That’s someone else’s problem.
It’s only later that we begin to exercise caution more than our freedom in Christ.
2 Timothy 1:7 says that’s not the way.
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
Let’s pull out our baseball glove; jump on that bicycle. Forget the training wheels, just go!
Jumping off the high dive? We can do it, with Christ as our instructor. Roller skates? We will ace it every time. Riding a skateboard? A piece of cake, easy as pie.
The difference is the power, love, and self-control that comes with being infused with the Spirit of God. When the Father truly becomes part of who we are, we become fearless in him.
Taking chances for Christ is vital to becoming successful for him.
