Hitting Out of the Rough

English Audio Version

Life is like a game of golf.

Sometimes our ball sails directly into the little hole, and other times we find ourselves way off course.

We stand on the tee, pull out a driver, and we whack our job into motion, aiming for a promotion at the end of the fairway. We watch our fortunes soar in hopes that we will hit a hole-in-one.

Sometimes we make it, and the world cheers our brilliance. What about those times, though, when we watch our ball tumble into the rough?

Our neighborhood goes downhill, and we can’t resell for what we paid. Or our car is a lemon, and the expense saps our budget.

Maybe our child goes off-kilter, and rehab isn’t covered by insurance. What do we do then?

Luke 9:56 gives us a firm plan of action.

“And they went on to another village.”

Whaa?? What does that mean, and how does it help us?

In this chapter, a Samaritan village rejected Jesus. Did Jesus fret? Instead, he simply suggested his disciples follow him to another village to minister elsewhere. The point is that Jesus didn’t focus on the failure but on the future. He looked ahead and not behind.

When our plans land us in the rough, we must hit our way out. Take another shot. Shift the plan of action. Go on to another village. Recalibrate, find a different way to bring about our success.

What we can’t do is stand in the rough, wail at our misfortune, and fail to finish the game.

We must move forward with Christ as our guide and heaven as our goal.
