The Trumpet of the Lord

English Audio Version

The five o’clock buzzer is our favorite sound.

The workday is over, our duty is done. It’s time to head home for some time to ourselves.

We can let down our hair. What we do doesn’t matter until the morning sun arises on a new day.

An advertising line has become the gold standard of quotable phrases: What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

It’s a good one, too, and catchy. After a self-indulgent evening, we can return to work, toss out that line, and laugh about it.

God’s five o’clock buzzer is a bit different.

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 tells us:

“The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.”

Every moment of our life matters to God. Our integrity can’t end with the five o’clock buzzer. What we say at the dinner table, the fight with our spouse, and the late-night cable show we watch will one day come out.

Jesus is our standard bearer. He is our model for ethical behavior. He walked the earth to understand us, and he calls us to him to redeem us.

The trumpet of the Lord will one day sound, and we must be ready when it does.

Excerpt of the Day

A promise to the devil can be laughed off when we have Jesus standing at our side. A promise from the devil is worthless, and should be laughed off even faster.
