So, who’s top dog in your world?
Me, me, me!
We’ve listened to children as we choose who goes first. No one wants to be second in line. They jump up and down hoping to be at the head of the crowd, to get first choice, and to have the best options given to them.
As adults, we don’t grow past that. Who’s ever chosen the longest line at the bank; picked the worst apples out of the bin; only stopped for the highest-priced gas in town?
In John 13, we find Jesus and his disciples reclining at a meal, and Jesus is giving his followers his final instructions before he faces Calvary. He explains the relationship of a servant to a master, and of a messenger to the one who sent him.
In John 13:17, Christ wraps his words and ties them with a promise:
“If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”
We can apply Jesus’ words in this way: If we follow our Lord’s teachings, blessings will follow after us; they will sprinkle our path; we will trip over them, there will be so many.
We learn how to live by spending time in God’s Word . . . we learn who he is . . . we discover how to put Jesus first and ourselves second.
We learn how to turn me, me, me, into you, you, you.
When Jesus is the center of who we are, who we are will be centered on him.
