Our Laughing God

What do we find funny?

It’s not the same for everyone. Charlie Chaplin’s slapstick drove people to a mania of laughter, one that made him the toast of the town in the early years of Hollywood.

Other people like more subtle humor, a dry comment spoken about something, one that only the most astute listener will get. They like their laughter to be more restrained.

The crassest of us laugh at others’ misfortunes. If a driver crashes his car in a wildly unusual way, that’s funny to us. We think, how stupid, and we email it off in a link for everyone to share.

What does God find funny? That’s easy. It’s the foolishness of Man.

Psalm 2:1-4 says:

“Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying, ‘Let us burst their bonds apart and cast away their cords from us.’ He who sits in the heavens laughs; the Lord holds them in derision.”

We have to remember the history of heaven to understand God’s response. A third of the angels, led by Lucifer, were cast from God’s eternal kingdom because of their disobedience. The earth is their domain. When Man rises up against God, it’s really the Cursed One cast from the heavens that twists humanity’s desires to evil.

When God laughs at the rulers over the earth, he laughs at the one who tried to best him in heaven, and who was so easily defeated and cast to a lower place. God laughs at Satan, wondering if he will ever learn his lesson.

God finds the devil’s presumptiveness funny. It’s like the man who crashes his car in the most stupid manner possible, then when he gets another, he does exactly the same thing. Who wouldn’t find that funny?

All power in heaven and earth is God’s. When we bind up our lives with Jesus, we become one with God. When the devil is stupid enough to come against us, we will laugh along with our God.

How many times can the devil run into a brick wall before he realizes the wall will always be in his way every single time?

It’s funny to watch, and that’s why we have a laughing God.

Watching the devil try to win is like a comedy revue. It’s funny every time.

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
