Our Relaxation Vacation

Some vacations are not relaxing. We have no “chill” time, no mornings to put up our feet, and certainly no easing of the stress that’s daily fare in our work-a-day world.

A television travel host that was on the road for a year, having his passport stamped in all the locations we read about but that are too difficult to actually reach, was exhausted after a day in a remote location. He’d ridden ponies through icy mountain streams, struggled with altitude sickness, and eaten stomach-turning food. His thought on the events he’d endured? He wasn’t on a vacation. He was on an adventure.

We embark on an adventure every morning we open our eyes. It’s called life. It can be exciting, and there are moments we wouldn’t trade away. However, it’s exhausting, too. There are times we need a spa, to be treated with kind hands, and to have nothing that concerns us except to enjoy the moment.

Now, that’s chasing an adventure, because who gets that?

Let’s see. Acts 3:19-20 tells us:

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the Lord.”

To break the verse down, when we repent, we release our sense of self-justification and accept the supreme authority of God. Our conversion is the stamp on our passport that we have permission to set out on God’s tour bus through life.

When God blots out our sin, we receive our justification by faith. Our faith is our travel ticket to lands unknown.

Times of refreshing come when we reach the end of the day, return the pony to the stable, and find that our appointment at the spa is ready and waiting. Our spa appointment is time spent in the arms of our Lord, those moments of peace we find in him, which are no more than a precursor for heaven, our eternal reward in Christ.

There’s only one way to find a vacation that’s truly relaxing. We need to head out on the Jesus Tour, where the end of every day is time spent with him in prayer and thanksgiving. That’s when he can recharge our lives, and ease the stress of our work-a-day world.

When we find our peace in Jesus, he becomes our charging station and empowers us in his name.
