It depends on our eyes what we see.
For cats? Everything is viewed in monochromatic shades of blue and gray. Try a fly’s eyes. You’ll get a 360 degree view of everything all at once. A tarsier has to rotate its entire head to look a different direction. A chameleon can move each eye independently. The mantis shrimp has as many as 20,000 parts to its eyes, each one absorbing light independently.
What do our spiritual eyes look like? It’s important, because the eyes we have determine the picture we receive.
Luke 10:18 describes the past with the eyes of eternity.
“And he said to them, ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.’ ”
Jude 1:6 shows us the eyes of God’s righteousness.
“And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.”
John 1:14 looks on our situation with the eyes of worship.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Isaiah 14:12 laments Lucifer’s downfall with eyes of sorrow.
“How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low!”
Revelation 6:1-5 gazes at our future with the eyes of anticipation.
“Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of the seven seals, and I heard one of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, ‘Come!’ And I looked, and behold, a white horse! And its rider had a bow, and a crown was given to him, and he came out conquering, and to conquer. When he opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, ‘Come!’ And out came another horse, bright red. Its rider was permitted to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword. When he opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, ‘Come!’ And I looked, and behold, a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand…”
James 1:2-5 regards our upcoming trouble with the eyes of expectation.
“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him…”
2 Timothy 3:16 views Scripture with the eyes of certainty.
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.”
Ephesians 6:12 scrutinizes our battle with the eyes of the spirit.
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
Galatians 2:1-5 contemplates dissention with the eyes of clarity.
“Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, taking Titus along with me. I went up because of a revelation and set before them (though privately before those who seemed influential) the gospel that I proclaim among the Gentiles, in order to make sure I was not running or had not run in vain. But even Titus, who was with me, was not forced to be circumcised, though he was a Greek. Yet because of false brothers secretly brought in—who slipped in to spy out our freedom that we have in Christ Jesus, so that they might bring us into slavery— to them we did not yield in submission even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you...”
John 8:44 flays the followers of the devil with the eyes of truth.
“You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”
John 3:16 speaks to us with the eyes of love.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
We see God’s love where we choose to see it. It’s not hidden if we look unto the Lord with Christ’s eyes.
