Kit cars were a popular automotive choice in the 1970s. The wheeled machines rolling out of Detroit were bland, and people wanted to spice up their rides. Pick a kit, from a Ford GT40, a Mako Shark, a Ferrari LM, a De Tomaso Mangusta, to a Lamborghini. We could ride in style.
The only problem was that we had the look of the real thing, but there was no substance underneath. Our car might look like a GT40, but underneath it was still a Volkswagen Beetle from ten or twenty years earlier. It might look fast, but turn the key, and everyone knew the truth.
We were driving a prettified VW.
How did a prospective buyer recognize the real thing? They looked for the evidence that would tell the truth. They opened the hood to look for a performance engine. They measured the wheelbase and checked the tires. In short, they verified the details. If they didn’t match, then they hadn’t found the real thing.
What details tell the truth of the Christ and his provenance of deity? We can read about them in the Bible.
Verification #1:
Mark 16:1-20 tells the story of the resurrection of Jesus. This is definitive proof that the God engine is under the hood.
Verification #2:
Isaiah 7:14 says his birth shall be of a virgin. From the moment of his conception, Jesus’ manufacture was without doubt.
Verification #3:
2 Timothy 3:16 assures us all Scripture is breathed of God. From design to execution, our manual is the official book of truth.
Verification #4:
Micah 5:2 gives us Bethlehem’s future glory as the birthplace of Christ. This was truth in advertising. Bethlehem was the least in the kingdom, and God made it first, something only he could do.
Verification #5:
1 Peter 2:24 promises that by his wounds we are already healed. Each time we claim that promise, we give another J. D. Power Award of Excellence to Jesus.
Verification #6:
John 20:17 quotes Jesus. “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ” Jesus’ all-terrain badge tells the truth of his underpinnings. He can go anywhere and do all that he claims.
Verification #7:
2 Kings 19:35 relates the story of the 185,000 Assyrians struck down by the angel of the Lord in one night. This is provenance beyond compare. When Jesus says he has all the power, he can back it up.
So, are we ready for an upgrade? Are we searching for a better life, for truth in advertising, and for a higher power that will perform as promised?
Drive away in a Jesus. We will not be disappointed.
Jesus lives up to the hype. Take him for a test drive and see.
