Chalking Up One for Christ

English Audio Version

“Another day,” we moan, as the sun peeks through the blinds.

The truth is, we failed so many times yesterday that today seems impossible.

How can we face another failure? We stumbled while trying to witness, we were so hungry that we missed our morning prayer time, and yes (sob!) we yelled at our spouse yet again.

And that weight loss plan so that we can go on the church mission trip? The package of cookies was empty before we knew we’d eaten them all. What’s the point in even trying?

Philippians 3:13-14 says consistency is better than perfection. One step at a time, and we move a little closer to our goal.

“Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Here’s what Paul is telling us: We can’t let yesterday determine the effort we put into today.

Thomas Edison famously said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." He viewed each failure/attempt as valuable, successful proof of what did not work, rather than as a true failure.

Now we know one witnessing method that doesn’t work. We know that a snack beside our Bible will give us time for prayer before our real breakfast. We should count to three before replying to an upsetting encounter with our spouse.

And that weight loss plan? Calculate those cookies over the next week. Adjust your calories down for a few days and enjoy the memory of how they tasted.

The point is that you’re trying, and that puts you way ahead of everyone who just gives up and doesn’t try at all.

Every time you move ahead through sheer determination, you are chalking up one for Christ. He is your yardstick, and he will be with you every step of the way.

We live blinded to the spiritual world until it's time for us to grow into maturity in Christ.
