The Ten-Percent Rule

English Audio Version

Nah, this isn’t about dropping money on the offering plate. Yes, you should, but I’m not here to talk about that.

I want to talk to you about how to find joy in your day.

My wife headed out early one morning and sent me a photo of her outside rearview mirror. Ahead of her, the roadway stretched into a clear blue sky, but behind, reflected in the mirror, the most amazing sunrise painted the eastern sky with reds, yellows, and oranges.

Life always looks better in our rearview. Today can be abrupt, startling, or even plain and ordinary, but it’s just what it is. Yesterday changes today into the rose-tinted memory of a brilliant sunrise. We see it in our mind, think, “Oh, how much better we had it then,” and don’t consider that today will soon be our yesterday.

The reality is that we must find joy in today, because this is the best part of what God gives us, the present, right now, this very moment.

James 1:2-4 tells us how it’s done:

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

“Consider it pure joy …” What you are facing today is the very thing you will look back at and see differently. Now for the ten-percent rule:

Life is ten percent what happens and ninety percent how you respond to what happens.

You see, we notice what we pay attention to. If you look for troubles coming your way, then you’ll see only the troubles you face. If you want to find joy, it’s there. Look for joy, and while the other things will be there, they will tumble down the hill, and the flowers are what you will remember.

Expect joy. That can be your ninety percent, and the rest? It’s not important anyway.
