When All Hope Fails

How bad can bad be?

How crushed can life make us?

It’s easy to feel the surf rise around us, to find ourselves rolling in the turbulent waves, and to lose sight of up and down. The sky loses focus, and we can’t seem to find a way out.

Our hope is lost. We no longer feel there is a way forward for us. We can’t escape the water, and we’ve gone down for the final time.

Zephaniah 3:15 says our hope is already here:

“The Lord has taken away your judgments, He has cast out your enemy. The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; You shall see disaster no more.” (NKJV)

Opinions formed against you? Banished, as if they never were.

Court judgments that didn’t go in your favor? God can still turn them around.

A job situation that seems intolerable? God is the provider that gives you favor in every situation.

Even more, God has already “cast out your enemy.” He has breathed his breath into the wind and blown it into the enemy camp. When you invoke God’s covering over your life, the enemy is overwhelmed with pain, distress, and anxiety. God will focus his attention on your enemy, and in their anxiety, they will remove themselves from your presence and from your attention.

Praise his holy name!

Let’s rejoice in the second half of this verse:

“The King of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; You shall see disaster no more.”

Disaster? Kicked out the door!

Sorrow? Thumped to the roadside!

Despair? It no longer applies to you!

Our hope might fail, but Jesus never does. Place your faith in him, and he will overcome every bad thing that has, is, or will come your way!

Then, lift your hands in praise unto him!
