Loss.
We’ve had something, and now it’s gone.
Perhaps it’s a spouse, lost to death or dementia.
A child … it’s hard to lose a young one we treasure so much.
A career wiped out by redundancy, changing technology, or the whims of the marketplace.
A home battered by storms … perhaps destroyed by wind or rain. Or burned to nothing in a raging wildfire set by someone too careless to know the damage they’ve done.
We look around, overwhelmed by our suffering, and we can’t find our way forward.
“Help, Jesus,” we whisper, no longer sure he’s even there.
Psalm 20:4 (NIV) tells us to look up. Our salvation is near.
“May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.”
This verse starts with the word may. It’s an admonition that some of God’s blessing depends on us.
May … if you want it badly enough … if you’re willing to look past the pain … if you’re willing to look away from your loss and place your trust in him.
May he give you …
Give. Hand you. Provide without takebacks.
The desire of your heart …
That desire only comes on the other side of the pain. It points to the future. If you remain consumed by your loss, your desire will wither away.
Make all your plans succeed.
Help. Healing. To move on. A fresh start … what do you need to move past your loss, to begin to live again?
That’s what God wants for you. Trust him. Tell him what you desire. Open your heart to hearing what God wants from you so that he can bring about your desires.
Give God a chance. He wants you to be whole again.
