God Says, “Not Yet”

The end is near!

Nation against nation and brother against brother!

Wars and rumors of wars!

Climate change is going to destroy everything!

Let’s quit our jobs so that we can spend all our time in prayer …

God says, “Hold on, buttercup. I’m not quite done yet.”

Here’s how he puts it in Genesis 8:22 ESV:

“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.”

You see, the  earth is still under our feet. The sun is still in the sky. Certainly, we have too many countries who want what is not theirs (and are willing to fight for it). Some people can’t get along with anyone. And those people in Florida and California? There are some places that are beautiful but where no one should build a home.

Cold and heat … summer and winter … day and night …

Well, it means that you SHOULD get up and go to work tomorrow … join fellow Christians at church this weekend … plan next summer’s vacation … appreciate that retirement accounts are important even for the devoted Christian.

God hasn’t pulled the plug on earth (and humanity) just yet. We must live spiritually as if he is coming tomorrow but in the world as if the turning of the earth will never cease.

While the earth remains …

Life isn’t over for you, even if some idiot in a distant land is determined to bomb innocents. That war, that hurricane, that terrible wildfire doesn’t determine the end of the world. God decides, and it’s up to us to live in this world until God chooses otherwise.

So, get out, smell the fresh air, plant some flowers, drive a hybrid, take a vacation, drop an extra check in the church offering, tell your children that you love them.

God is in control. Let’s let him remain in control and get on with the life he’s given us to live.

Nine-tenths of Christianity is caring for those who walk at our side.
