Our Refuge in the Lord

Sit on the floor and roughhouse with a puppy. They quickly learn that one of their safest spots is as close to you as possible.

How can “closer to you” be safer? It seems it would put the puppy in harm’s way.

Here’s the thing: When that puppy jumps into your lap or tries to tuck up under your leg, it triggers the “pet” response. You treat it differently. Instead of roughhousing, now you begin to shower it with affection.

How is God any different?

Psalm 34:8 tells us:

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” NIV

When we feel battered by life, and we wonder where the good hand of God is, maybe we’re the problem. We need to tuck in to him, to draw closer, to find our refuge in him.

“Taste and see …” yes, that’s what it says. It means to give him a try. He will prove himself.

Bills overdue? Continue to support your church, and God’s finances will open for you.

Conflict with family members? Invite them for dinner and shower them with love. Don’t preach, just show them care and concern.

Health issues? Search out healing scriptures in the Word. Let them become part of your daily litany of good things the Lord wants for you.

“Blessed in the one who takes refuge …” and God’s “pet” response is triggered. He will want to do for you the closer you draw to him.

A teacher of the Word recently said, “You may think the answer to your prayer is no more than coincidence, and it may well be. But coincidences happen because God intervenes to bring them about.”

That “coincidence” is your answer, your blessing, the Lord telling you that despite everything happening in your life, he LOVES you.

Find your refuge in the Lord. He wants to prove his love to you.
