Keeping Our Closet Light On

Who hasn’t seen Pixar’s 2001 Monsters, Inc., an animated film that gave us a light-hearted look at the monsters that children imagine hiding in the dark?

“Animated,” we muse, “of course. After all, monsters aren’t real, are they?”

The Bible seems to think so. Let’s read in Genesis 1:21 in the NASB version:

“And God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good.”

Note what this verse tells us. God created the sea monsters … and saw that it was good.

So, what is a monster? Other translations of the Word use the word “creature” instead of monster. The KJV calls them “whales,” and one version (ABPE) refers to them as “dragons.”

From this we can extrapolate what a monster is from a Biblical viewpoint: something big, unfamiliar, and too frightful for us to wrap our heads around.

Then there are the very real, everyday monsters that inhabit our lives. That dreaded health diagnosis. Divorce. Financial ruin. Human trafficking. Abusive situations.

We want to keep the light on so that no one sees the scars we carry beneath our glittering façade of beautiful success. Don’t look too close. I’m damaged inside. You’re not allow to see.

Yet, in that 2001 movie, a closer look at the monsters behind the closet doors revealed them to be less evil and more like everyday joes trying to make a living … like you and me.

Here’s what John 8:12 says:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Jesus is the light of the world … if you think about it, you’ll get it. With Jesus at our side, the closet light is always on. Monsters banished! Bad health, gone! Divorce, kicked out the door! Finances, resolved! Trafficking, abuse, and others … invisible against the brilliance of the presence of Our Lord.

Our monsters become manageable when we turn them over to Jesus. Let’s release them to him today.
