What are the chances something good will happen to you today?
Even better, what makes a day special? What we expect or the surprise that we stumble over on the way to something else?
A traveler can happen on a parade or hot air balloon festival unexpectedly and remember the exhilaration for years.
A bride can live her special day in exhaustion, irritated that the day was less than perfect.
Who remembers something good happening that day?
In 2012, a Texas family stopped at Niagara Falls for the night on the way to a Maine vacation. A hotel room was hard to come by, and the next day, they discovered why. Just beyond their room overlooking the water, Nik Wallenda was performing a tightrope walk across Niagara Falls.
The family searched for a hotel room, and they happened on a televised event attended by over 100,000 excited observers. What a treat!
Matthew 2:1-2 tells of another group of travelers that searched for one thing and found something better.
“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying, ‘Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.’ ”
We think of this as a Christmas verse, but it’s so much more. It applies to how we should live every day. The wise men searched for the king of the Jews and tumbled into the terrific, for they came upon the divine Savior of all mankind.
That can be us every day. It’s not just what we search for that makes us happy. It’s the special and unexpected that can bring us new levels of joy.
Let’s keep our eyes open. God has something unexpected for us today.
