Automobile enthusiasts are a heady lot.
The things about cars that interest them seem mysterious to the rest of society.
The odor of oil and gas, the burnt rubber smell of a racetrack, or grease under their fingernails, it’s all part of the fun.
They especially enjoy the growl of a loud exhaust, a belching contraption that wakes up the neighbors and sets off car alarms. Hit the gas, and the exhaust screams as they shift through the gears.
The rest of us want our peace and quiet. A car is an appliance, we insist. It’s made to get us from here to there, in comfort, if possible, but safely first and foremost. How loud it sounds is secondary, often irritating, and totally irrelevant to the experience.
And the gearhead drama elevates to a frenzy . . .
Modern cars have the answer to our dilemma right from the factory floor. We can flip a switch and choose city or track, quiet or loud, to let our engine burble or have it roar with unleashed power. We don’t need to wait for high gear for our exhaust to become bearable.
Our car can sound sweet no matter the situation.
John 14:27 tells us life can be just like that.
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
Jesus is our control switch, turning down the decimation of everyday life. When we follow him, he changes us, improves our situation, and makes something wonderful out of who we are.
Jesus shifts our life into high gear, and we find our success in him.
When we become a Jesus enthusiast, we will enjoy every part of who he is.
