Broken Bones Restored

A broken bone is one of the most devastating injuries we can receive. The pain is incredible, the recovery is interminable, and the aftermath is less than idyllic. We suffer through thunderstorms and weather changes aching at the old break.

Why can’t someone simply make our bones new again?

In Jeremiah 50:17-20, God recognizes Israel’s plight. The king of Assyria has devoured Israel, treating her as scattered sheep running before the lions. Then to make matters worse, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, has broken the bones of God’s people.

We often stand in Israel’s shoes, feeling the crush of defeat. We see the enemy coming at us with teeth bared, and we know we cannot survive on our own. We are no more than a tidbit of food to be devoured in the jaws of destruction.

However, God says he will rise before those who have come against us, just as he punished the king of Assyria and the king of Babylon. He will crush those who have done us wrong, as he crushed those who had done Israel wrong.

In fact, God will make our bones new again. In the time of our renewing, people will search for the broken places in our lives, and they will not be found. God will wipe them clean as if they never were.

When life has beaten us down, and we are certain we can never rise again, remember that God is our champion, and when he lifts us up, there are none who can stand against us.

When God restores our lives, we become new creatures in him, and there is no remnant of the old man to be found.

When Jesus comes to us, we must be ready to respond to him in the moment of his passing.
