Train cars follow one another along the track.
That’s how trains work. There’s one engine, and it pulls the cars behind it.
Unhook a car, and it’s not going anywhere. Nada. It’s stuck in that spot until another engine comes along.
Here’s the other thing. The train cars can only follow the track the engine chooses. Right or left, up the mountain or down, a good path or a bad one.
The train cars are our children. We are the engine. We choose the path, and we do well to keep our children hooked to the teachings of Christ.
Proverbs 22:6 says:
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Train in this verse means to instruct, but it works in our example, also. To train can also mean to put a person on a certain path, to guide their way, or to send them down a predetermined course.
Even the caboose reaches the station, no matter how many cars are on the train.
How do we instruct our children so that they reach God’s destination? Here are four ways:
1. Read them Bible stories when they are young. The stories will stick with them long after they leave home.
2. Keep them in church. They will form Christian friendships with people who will support their faith in Christ.
3. Talk to them about your faith. Make it a part of your daily conversation. Share the importance of God in your life.
4. Live what you teach. Your example in following Christ will speak louder than your words ever can.
You are the engine, and your family follows the track you choose. Choose Christ, and even the caboose will reach heaven with you.
Christ leads the church, and we are to follow in the way he goes.
