Wedding photos are beautiful.
Two people in love. Stars in their eyes. Tomorrow is a bright future, and nothing will prevent them from achieving their anticipated goals.
- A cozy home
- Much loved children
- Friends and a place in the community
- Retiring together, hand-in-hand
Then, bo—nk! It all goes sideways. One small indiscretion. A sideways glance. That weekend in Vegas … that never stays in Vegas.
Proverbs 6:25-29 gives us 2 Analogies for a Better Marriage.
“Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes; for the price of a prostitute is only a loaf of bread, but a married woman hunts down a precious life. Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned? Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched? So is he who goes in to his neighbor's wife; none who touches her will go unpunished.”
The emphasis isn’t in the original, but that’s the focus today. Let’s pull out and look at each of these two analogies separately.
Analogy No. 1:
“Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned?”
The passion of our illicit involvement outside of marriage isn’t hidden. It burns into every part of us and is visible to everyone.
Analogy No. 2:
“Or can one walk on hot coals and his feet not be scorched?”
Not only can others see the damage we’ve done, our misdeed affects us, also. We become damaged through our affair.
Here’s the key. Don’t even look. As the passage says, “Do not desire her beauty in your heart.”
Follow the marriage advice in the Word, and your relationship will be strengthened by the trust you find in each other.
