This is a simple instruction directly from the Word of God.
There’s no waffling about, no hem-hawing, no way to get out of it if we want to claim to be a Christian.
Luke 18:20 spells it out.
“You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’ ”
The first four of these are obvious. We wouldn’t sleep around, not and keep a clear conscience. Murder? Theft? To blatantly mislead someone with lies? Too horrible to contemplate.
Yet, honoring our parents seems harder, less distinct, more difficult to pin a face on.
How do we honor our parents? Here are 7 ways.
- Show them your gratitude with flowers once a month.
- Call them on the phone to chat. Every week. About nothing.
- Ask them their opinion and respect it. It may be fuddy-duddy, but it is theirs.
- Pray for their needs. Let them know you did and ask them how things turned out.
- Encourage them with cards, social media posts, and small gifts.
- Don’t bring up old hurts. Forgive them. Start each day fresh.
- Speak of and about them positively, even in private. What better honor can you give?
That’s a good start, 7 Ways to Honor Your Parents.

Honor your parents, and you’ll find that God will honor you.
