Our Responsibility in Christ

English Audio Version

Duty.

That’s a word no one wants to hear.

Merriam-Webster tells us it’s a form of respect; an obligatory task; a moral or legal obligation.

Webster’s also says it’s something we’re assigned to do; our responsibility.

So, what is our responsibility? What are we, as Christians, required to do?

1 Timothy 5:8 doesn’t leave us much wriggle room.

“But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”

We are to be filled with love, preach the gospel, and give generously to the poor. We’re to treat our neighbors as ourselves. These are part of our Christian walk. However, if we do all these things and don’t provide for our father, our mother, our siblings, our spouse, and our children, we’ve denied the power of Christ and our redemption through him.

Let’s return to Webster’s for a moment. Duty is a form of respect, in addition to something we’re assigned to do. When we respect our family, we will provide for them as proof of our faith in Christ.

When we accept our Christian responsibility, we become the nurturer our family needs to see in us.
