What Is Faith to You?

English Audio Version

Faith.

Yes, Virginia, there is a God. A higher power. An unseen hand that controls the mechanism of the cosmos.

Do I believe in God? Of course, Virginia. We’re here, aren’t we?

Do I think he cares about what happens to us? Well, um …

Faith and belief are two different things. We can believe in Social Security, that it’s in place, and that it has paid out benefits to millions. But faith that it will still be there when we need it? Well, um …

Here’s the aspect of faith I want to look at today: sticking to what you believe.

Another word that might help you out is faithfulness. We hear the old song, “Great is your faithfulness …” So, let’s break it down. Being full of … what? Faith. And faithfulness means to stick by our spouse, our God, our work plan, what we said we would do.

Yes, God, I’ll walk away from that … until we don’t.

Those friends, the ones that led me astray … I enjoyed them so much.

But it’s such a beautiful Sunday morning, and I haven’t been to the lake in weeks …

Psalm 78:7 tells us:

“That they should put their confidence in God, not forgetting His works, but keeping His commandments.”

Having faith in God is different than believing he exists. When we have faith, we exhibit faithfulness. When we are full of faith, we stick by our covenant with God and do what his Word tells us to do.

Walk uprightly. Treat others with dignity. Be generous with the needy. Help others when we can—even when it inconveniences us.

So, what is faith to you? It’s important to get this right.

Your eternity depends on it.
