What to Do When Nothing Makes Sense

A storm hits, something smacks the side of the house, and we go, “Whoa! What was that?”

In 2020, a weather event slammed into eastern North Carolina. Something flashed across a family’s front yard and was gone. Checking, the side of their car was crumpled.

An unsecured trampoline had been picked up by the wind and slammed into their car. It lay crumpled in a yard down the street.

Yikes! What’s the sense in that? The car was parked securely off the street, and now the side looked like it came out of a meat grinder!

People deal with collapsing relationships, financial deals gone sour, or a devastating medical diagnosis. “We were living a good life. Why is this happening to us?”

God’s Word in Proverbs 3:5-6 assures us that while we might be confused, God never is.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

We can only see to the moment we are in. The future is over the next hill, around the next curve, and out of our sight. We can orchestrate our lives, but the wind of the upcoming storm can whip everything out of control before we can blink. Events flash across our view, and when we blink, we are left to deal with the resulting damage.

Yet God says to praise him for his goodness and give him credit for the good still around you. The damage left by the storm?

Leave that to him. He will lead you through it as if it’s not even there.

He will make sense out of the chaos so that you don’t have to.

It's the grace that comes out of our troubles that helps others find Jesus in us.
