Smashing It for God

This might seem weird, but let’s talk about cooking.

Smash burgers, to be specific.

“Smash burger” is just another term for a hamburger, but one made in a very specific way. Rather than form the meat into a carefully curated shape, a smash burger is made like it sounds. Scoop a ball of meat, drop it onto the griddle, and smash it flat with a spatula.

However, for non-cooks, even that seems too involved. Where’s the preformed patty, the one we can pull out and simply go for it?

No grinding the meat, no stirring it in a bowl, no dipping it out, and certainly no smashing involved … yet still giving us smash burger quality.

In desperation, a last-minute host grabbed a box of frozen “smash burgers” out of the grocery freezer section with the plans to thaw them before his dinner guests arrived. Only later did he read on the box: Do Not Thaw.

What? As in, cook them frozen? He checked the directions, and they clearly said: Place in hot pan while frozen. After four minutes, turn over and cook for two additional minutes.

He doubted, especially when after the first three minutes, the patties still had frost on them … but after the flip and two minutes on the opposite side … the burgers were perfect.

He had doubted, followed the directions anyway, and smashed his way to success!

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) tells us:

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

In other words, we can be a “smashing” success for God if we follow his instructions. It’s not what we think that counts but placing our trust in God.

When we follow the Word, submit to the will of God, and let him guide our feet, we will never go astray again.
