“I can’t.”
Have you heard that one? Perhaps you’ve even said it yourself.
“I can’t volunteer for nursery duty. My back, you see …”
“I wish I could help fund the new carpet, but I just had my car repaired …”
“I’m sorry. I’ve never been good at that …”
“My granddaughter is coming over …”
“I don’t have enough room …”
“The bright lights hurt my eyes …”
“The music is too loud …”
Okay, let’s stop there. However, did you recognize yourself in one of these statements?
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 (NIV) tells us:
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
This passage tells us that our weakness has no bearing on what we can do for God. In our weakness, God steps in and fills in the gaps.
So, instead of “I can’t,” try these:
“Who will be in the nursery to help me with the babies …”
“I have $5 I can give now. Remind me next week, and I might have more …”
“If you’ll have someone teach me …”
“Is it okay if my granddaughter comes …”
“We may have to move the coffee table …”
“I’ll need to wear my sunglasses …”
“Do I get a choice in the music we listen to …”
Step up to God’s opportunities. When we desire to work for him, he will be sufficient for the day.
